Video Interview Tips from PCI’s Recruiter, Tiffany McGarry

June 28, 2023

Since March 2020, we all know video interviews have become the “norm” as part of an interview process, whether your company is 100% remote or not. Employers have chosen to incorporate video interviews as part of their process over a phone interview due to being able to see body language while partaking in the interview. It also gives a more personal and formal feel to the interview process over a phone interview while remaining convenient for all participants.

When you participate in a video interview, you want to make sure there are a few things you focus on to ensure you nail it.

  • Be video ready! Dress business casual, with limited distractions around you / behind you. The laptop may be set up in your kitchen, but the interviewer does not need to know that!
  • Print out a copy of your resume to have next to you. This sounds old school, but it will allow you to have the interview as your focus on your screen, while also being able to reference it if you need.
  • Express how your experience will translate into their environment, for this position. Take examples of past projects that you have worked on, tasks you have completed that show you have done what they are looking for in previous roles.
  • Questions – please ask questions. This interview is a great chance for interviewers to get to know you, but you should also be getting to know them, the company, and the role you are interviewing for.
  • Smile, breathe and you’ll do great!

Keep these few things in mind when you are on your next interview, video interviews in particular!

PS – Do not forget the follow-up thank you letter.
